This course deepens students’ awareness of how they interact with others, the filters and cultural imprints that drive their feelings and perspectives, and how they appear to others. By developing an awareness of self, students open the door for awareness of others. After identifying individual approaches, beliefs, behaviors, and communication barriers, this course focuses on shifting and expanding perspectives. It’s an opportunity for each student to develop effective communication through personal interactions. Meets LAC outcomes: HCA4, HCC6, LLC1. 5 crs.
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate awareness of their own cultural perceptual filters while comparing and contrasting verbal and nonverbal behavior patterns with their own cultural values. (Liberal Arts Core Outcome HCA5)
- Articulate the positive role of conflict in interpersonal relationships, set and clarify goals for conflict resolution, and identify styles of engaging in conflict and the consequences of those styles for how conflict proceeds. (Liberal Arts Core Outcome HCC6)
- Distinguish different levels and types of listening, their purposes and roles in critical thinking, and demonstrate strategies for improving listening effectiveness in specific contexts. (Liberal Arts Core LLC1)
